Castello di Morcote (Castle)

The origins of Castello di Morcote date back to Roman times, when a massive watchtower was part of the Roman defense system in the Prealps. Around the year 1100, during the bloody conflicts between Milan and Como for supremacy in Ticino, this tower was expanded into a fortress. After a long period without detailed records, the castle became prominent again during the era of the Dukes of Milan. The Visconti rebuilt the fortress in its current form, and from the mid-15th century, the Sforza transformed it into a military base directly controlled by the Duchy to secure their rule in the region. Contemporary documents described it as almost impregnable. In 1515, after the Battle of Marignano, the Duchy of Milan fell to the French and later to the Swiss. Castello di Morcote was subsequently granted to Captain Francesco Paleari for his military merits. His descendants preserved the castle for four centuries until it was acquired by the current owners of the estate in the early 20th century. It is the only surviving medieval fortress in southern Ticino, while other castles like Lugano and Sonvico were destroyed.
