Castels Castle (Ruin) (Putz)

The exact construction period of Castels Castle is not documented, but it is presumed that an early medieval refuge or church fortress was transformed into a feudal castle in the 13th century. The tower likely originated around 1200, while the oldest parts of the curtain wall date back to the 13th century. In the 14th century, Castels belonged to Ulrich von Aspermont and later came into the possession of the Toggenburg and Matsch families through sale and inheritance. Gaudenz von Matsch temporarily resided in the castle and pledged it multiple times before selling it to Emperor Maximilian in 1496. During the Swabian War in 1499, Castels was captured by the Bündner, but returned to Austria after the peace treaty.
