Château Moudon (Ruin)

The massive tower of the Moudon fortification dates back to the 12th century.

The castle of Moudon, strategically located on a hill, played an important role in the defense of the region. Originally built as a wooden fort, it was gradually expanded and reinforced with stone walls and towers over the centuries.

In the 13th century, the castle came into the possession of the House of Savoy, who further strengthened its fortifications. During this period, the castle served as an administrative center and a residence for the Savoyard governors.

The 15th century saw significant changes to the castle's architecture. New residential wings were added, and the existing structures were modernized to reflect the changing needs of the nobility. The castle's chapel, with its beautiful frescoes, also dates from this period.

With the rise of gunpowder and more advanced siege techniques, the castle gradually lost its military significance. In the 17th century, it was partially dismantled, and some of its stones were used for other construction projects in the town.

For centuries, the castle lay in ruins, overgrown by vegetation, and largely forgotten. It wasn't until the 19th century that historians and archaeologists began to take an interest in its rich past.

In the 20th century, extensive restoration work was undertaken to preserve the remaining structures of the castle. Today, the castle of Moudon is a popular tourist attraction and a testament to the region's fascinating history.

Visitors can explore the castle's grounds, climb the ancient tower, and imagine life within its walls centuries ago. The castle also hosts various cultural events and exhibitions throughout the year.

Opening Hours:

The castle grounds are accessible year-round. The tower and chapel are open to visitors from April to October, daily from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
