History+
When the castle was built is unknown. It belonged to the rule of the Counts of Gruyère. In 1407, the castle was destroyed.
Reconstruction and Expansion
The castle was rebuilt and expanded in the 15th century. It served as a residence for the Counts of Gruyère until 1555.
After the Counts of Gruyère
After the bankruptcy of the Counts of Gruyère in 1555, the castle became the property of the Canton of Fribourg. It was used as a seat for the bailiffs and later as a hospital.
Architecture+
The castle is a typical example of a Savoyard castle. It has a rectangular layout with four corner towers and a keep.
Interior
The interior of the castle houses various rooms, including the Knights' Hall, the Guard Room, and the Countess's Chamber. These rooms are decorated with frescoes and tapestries.
