In Dollnstein, on the northern bank of the Altmühl in Bavaria, the Dollnstein ruin stands on a rock formation. Its origins trace back to the Carolingian era.

History+

The origins of Dollnstein Castle can be traced back to the Carolingian period. By 1147 at the latest, the castle was owned by the Counts of Grögling, who later adopted the name Dollnstein. In 1305, the Counts of Öttingen took possession of Dollnstein and its castle. Just 55 years later, in 1360, the Lords of Heideck acquired the complex. A turning point occurred in 1440 when Bishop Albrecht II von Hohenrechberg purchased the castle for the Prince-Bishopric of Eichstätt, where it remained until its secularization in 1802.
