The Donaustauf Ruin is in the town of the same name in Bavaria. Once a fortress, it served for defense and shaped the development of the surrounding settlement.

History+

Between 914 and 930 AD, Bishop Tuto of Regensburg commissioned the construction of a castle to protect the region from Hungarian incursions. Between 1132 and 1161, the complex was captured four times and partially damaged. In the Middle Ages, the market town of Donaustauf developed into a civilian settlement in the shelter of the castle's fortifications.
