From Foundation to Destruction
In 1115, the castle was built by Bishop Otto of Bamberg as an official residence for the episcopal properties around Zell on the Ebersberg. The castle served as a ministerial castle with jurisdiction for Zell. In 1525, the castle was partially destroyed in the Peasants' War and subsequently rebuilt. In 1634, the castle was destroyed in the Thirty Years' War. From then on, it served as a quarry.
