Eberstein Castle (Ruin) (Brand)

The origins of Eberstein Castle date back to the 12th century, when it was built as the presumed ancestral seat of the Lords of Eberstein. However, this noble family gained notoriety through their activities as robber knights. This led to a decision in 1282: at a court session, the Bishop of Würzburg, Berthold II von Sternberg, and the Prince-Abbot of Fulda, Bertho IV, ordered the destruction of the castle. In 1454, when the deserted settlement belonged to the Lords von der Tann as vassals of Fulda, the name "Tannenfels" emerged. By 1557, only a shield wall remained of the fortress, and in 1830, the ruin was finally demolished.
