Eggersberg Castle (Ruin)

Eggersberg Castle is a castle ruin on the Kirchfelsen (Church Rock) above the Altmühl behind Eggersberg Palace, immediately north of the Obereggersberg district of the city of Riedenburg in the district of Kelheim in Bavaria.

The hilltop castle was built in the 13th century and first mentioned in 1326 as the fortress of Eggersberg, owned by the Bavarian dukes. Other co-owners of the castle were Wilhelm der Fraundorfer at the end of the 14th century, Balthasar Muracher around 1417, Haimeran von Muggenthaler in 1435, and Georg von Pappenheim in 1480, as well as Knight Jörg von Helfenstein in 1485, under whom the castle fell into disrepair. From 1488 to 1493, it was destroyed in the Löwler War and demolished in 1613 after repair work. Around 1700, a Baroque chapel was built on the castle grounds, which collapsed in 1806. From the former castle complex, ashlar blocks of the keep, remains of the neck ditch, and remains of the chapel are still preserved.
