Ehrenfels Castle (Ruin)

The first documented mention of Ehrenfels Castle occurred in 1256 in a deed of gift from Chunrad von Ernfels. The Ehrenfelser family, descended from the Hohenfelser lineage, established their center of power away from existing settlements on the border of the Prince-Bishopric of Regensburg. The complex was expanded in the late Middle Ages, a fact still evident today in the bipartite division of the core castle. As early as 1567, the lordship of Ehrenfels was sold to Pfalz-Neuburg, after which the castle lost its central importance and progressively fell into disrepair. Parts of the castle were even used as a quarry for nearby Beratzhausen.
