Near Goldhausen in Hesse, the Eisenberg Ruin is a structure that once stood as a hilltop castle.

History+

The exact builders of the hilltop castle, which originated in the 13th century, are unknown. It was first documented in 1345, when it was owned by the Counts of Waldeck. From 1487, it served as the seat of the Eisenberg office and remained in the possession of the Waldeck-Eisenberg line of the comital house until 1692. In 1520, the castle was expanded into a palace under Count Philipp III and Anna of Cleves. In 1563, it received a small three-story Renaissance addition, and in 1586, a chapel.
