Eisenberg Castle (Ruin) (Goldhausen)

Eisenberg Castle is a castle ruin near Goldhausen, a district of Korbach in the Waldeck-Frankenberg district of northern Hesse.

The castle ruin is located in the Diemelsee Nature Park a few hundred meters northeast of Goldhausen on the summit of the Eisenberg (approx. 562 m above sea level), a mountain on the eastern Sauerland mountain range; the "Turmweg" (Tower Path) leads up from the parking lot at the edge of the village. The core town of Korbach is about 4 km (as the crow flies) northeast of the ruin.

Next to the castle ruin stands the Georg-Viktor-Turm observation tower. The "Goldspur Eisenberg" (Eisenberg Gold Trail) educational path passes by.

The builders of the hilltop castle, erected in the 13th century, are unknown. It was first mentioned in a document in 1345, as being in the possession of the Counts of Waldeck. In 1487, it became the seat of the Eisenberg office, and remained in the possession of the Waldeck-Eisenberg line of the comital house until 1692.

In 1520, the castle was expanded into a palace by Count Philipp III and Anna von Cleve. In 1563, it received a small three-story Renaissance building as an annex to the "New Palace" and a chapel in 1586.

In 1621, the inventory of the palace was destroyed by Hessian troops. Around 1700, the palace was neglected, in 1729 it was an uninhabitable ruin, and from 1749 it was demolished and the masonry used as building material.

The castle complex consisted of a tower and, according to traditional sketches and excavations of the foundations, of a core castle, gate bridge, three-story Renaissance building, castle chapel and a manor farm located below the castle.

Foundations, rampart and moat are still present.
