Ellhofen Castle (Ruin)

Ellhofen Castle was built towards the end of the 13th century by the Lords of Ellhofen, whose rule was first documented in 1287. From 1418, they held lower jurisdiction. The family died out in 1446 when Rudolf von Ellhofen was killed near Ragaz. His sisters then sold the property to Rudolf von Weiler. As early as 1462, the castle passed to the Counts of Montfort-Rothenfels. In 1475, Wilhelm von Neidegg, a patrician from Ravensburg, acquired the castle and village of Ellhofen for 1,600 guilders. During the Peasants' War in 1525, the castle was plundered and devastated. After the Neidegger line died out in 1562, the lordship was sold to the Teutonic Order.
