Falkenburg Castle (Ruin) (Rottleben)
The Falkenburg is a castle ruin in the Kyffhäuser district in Thuringia. The ruin is located above the Barbarossa Cave between the villages of Rottleben and Steinthaleben on the southwestern edge of the Kyffhäuser.
History
The hilltop castle, which probably consisted only of a keep surrounded by a deep moat, was built in the 11th century, but was first mentioned in documents in 1349 as the seat of Heinrich von Falkenburg. In 1458, by then a robber baron's castle, it was conquered and destroyed by a large army. The army was sent by an alliance of the cities of Erfurt, Nordhausen, Mühlhausen with Saxony-Weimar, Schwarzburg, Hohnstein, Stolberg and the Mainz Eichsfeld. Of the former Falkenburg, only a single larger wall remnant of the residential tower and the remains of a cistern have survived.
