Falkenburg Castle (Ruin) (Rottleben)

This hilltop castle, which likely originally consisted of a keep surrounded by a deep moat, was built in the 11th century. However, its first documentary mention was not until 1349, when it was named as the seat of Heinrich von Falkenburg. In 1458, after it had become a robber baron's castle, the Falkenburg was besieged and destroyed by an army. This army was an alliance of the cities of Erfurt, Nordhausen, and Mühlhausen, as well as the lordships of Saxony-Weimar, Schwarzburg, Hohnstein, Stolberg, and the Mainzian Eichsfeld.
