Fracstein Castle (Ruin) (Seewis)

The exact construction date of Fracstein Castle is unknown, but in the 13th century, it was owned by the Lords of Aspermont, who established a significant dominion in the Maienfeld region and the lower Prättigau, and likely built the main castle. Fracstein was first documented in 1338 during the division of the Aspermont estates. After the extinction of the Toggenburg counts in 1436, the castle passed to the Knights of Matsch, who sold it to Austria in 1466. Subsequently, the complex fell into disrepair and was already a ruin by the 16th century. During the Bündner Wirren in the 17th century, the old valley barrier near Fracstein was repaired once more and briefly occupied by Austrian troops before they were expelled by the rebellious inhabitants of Prättigau. In 1649, the Prättigauer Six-Jurisdictions League purchased the complex from Austria, and Fracstein became the property of the Schiers court.

The ruins of Fracstein are located in the municipality of Seewis im Prättigau, in the Prättigau/Davos district of the canton of Graubünden, Switzerland. It stands at an elevation of approximately 677 meters above sea level.

The ruins of Fracstein are accessible to visitors and can be explored. From the old cantonal road, a narrow, steep path leads to the site in just a few minutes.
