History+

The origins of Frauenstein Castle date back to 1184, when Heinrich Bodo von Idstein presumably began its construction. The name Vrouwensteyn, which later evolved into Frauenstein, contained the word “Stein” for a stone keep and “Vrouwe” (woman), likely referring to the Holy Virgin Mary as its namesake. In 1221, Heinrich Bodo von Idstein was documented as Heinrich Bodo von Vrouwensteyn, confirming the castle's existence at that time. A dendrochronological examination of a preserved beam in the keep confirmed the founding year of 1184. The castle faced few attacks.
