Frohburg Castle (Ruin) (Trimbach)

The settlement of the rocky ridge on which Frohburg stands dates back to the Bronze Age and Roman times. In the 10th century, an influential noble family established itself there, later calling themselves the Counts of Frohburg and deriving their name from the castle. This family shaped a wide region between the Aare and the Rhine until the 14th century. Over the centuries, the counts expanded their complex with numerous buildings, including a count's house, service buildings, and workshops. Archaeological finds even confirm a small iron smelting plant and the processing of bone. The castle had at least three cisterns for water supply. In the 14th century, the influence of the Frohburg counts waned, and the castle was gradually abandoned. After the family died out around 1367, the complex fell into disrepair and served as a quarry for surrounding settlements. Extensive excavations since the 1970s have provided valuable insights into its settlement history.

The Frohburg ruin is located at an altitude of approximately 824 m above sea level in Trimbach, in the Gösgen district, Canton Solothurn, Switzerland. It sits on a high rocky ridge above the Erlimoospass.
