Gleiberg Castle (Ruin)

The origins of Gleiberg Castle date back a long time, possibly built as a fortress by Otto, King Konrad's brother. In 949, Heribert von der Wetterau established the castle as the residence of his County of Gleiberg. After his death, it passed to Frederick of Luxembourg, the founder of the Luxembourg count's house. Around 980, the castle is mentioned as the possible birthplace of Empress Kunigunde. King Henry V conquered and destroyed the complex in 1103. A reconstruction took place in the 12th century after a second line of the Counts of Gleiberg had split off. Clementia von Gleiberg, a figure of the 12th century, founded the Augustinian Canons Regular monastery on the Schiffenberg in 1129.
