Gråborg Castle (Ruin)
The Gråborg ruin on the Swedish island of Öland is an impressive testament to prehistoric fortification art. It is considered the largest enclosed complex of its kind and fascinates with its dimensions and the mysterious history surrounding it.
History+
The origins of Gråborg castle date back a long time. Its development occurred in stages, reaching its greatest extent in the 12th century. The complex took on an approximately elliptical shape, stretching 210 meters in length and 160 meters in width, and was surrounded by a four-meter-high protective wall. Three entrances led inside, one of them reinforced with a tower in the Middle Ages. Although the exact time of its decay is unknown, archaeological finds, now exhibited in the Kalmar Provincial Museum, suggest its earlier use as a trading post. Nearby, the ruin of the St. Knud Chapel was also discovered, indicating close ties to Denmark and the Knudsgilde. Geomagnetic surveys between the chapel and the castle revealed a deep ditch, traces of at least seven houses, a road, and possibly a well.
