Greifenstein Castle (Ruin)
A former hilltop castle, the Greifenstein Ruin, lies high above the Holzelfingen Valley in Baden-Württemberg. Originally conceived as a castle complex consisting of Ober- and Untergreifenstein, parts of the curtain wall are still preserved today.
The origins of Greifenstein Castle date back to the 12th century when it was built by the Knights of Greifenstein. Its strategic location served to secure the surrounding valleys. A decisive event in its history was its destruction in 1311 during the War of the Cities by Reutlingen. In the mid-14th century, specifically 1355, the complex came into the possession of Württemberg. The former castle complex included a keep, living quarters, storage, and a dungeon.
The Greifenstein Ruin is situated on a rock near Lichtenstein in the district of Reutlingen, Baden-Württemberg, Germany. It lies at an elevation of approximately 748 m above sea level.
