Greifenstein Castle (Ruin)

Greifenstein Castle is a group of castles consisting of Obergreifenstein and Untergreifenstein castles. They are located on a rock above the Holzelfingen Valley near the municipality of Lichtenstein in the Reutlingen district in Baden-Württemberg.

The hilltop castle was built by the Knights of Greifenstein in the 12th century to secure the surrounding valleys, destroyed in 1311 during the War of the Cities by Reutlingen, and was owned by Württemberg in 1355. Of the former castle complex, whose keep was located directly behind the moat and around which living quarters, storage, and a dungeon were clustered, remains of the curtain wall are still preserved.
