West of Zierenberg, the ruin of Großer Gudenberg is on a basalt cone. Once a stronghold in Northern Hesse and a Mainz fief, it now stands as a freely accessible site.
History+
The origins of Großer Gudenberg Castle likely date back to the time of the Hessian Gau count Werner IV, although its first documented mention was not until 1209. It served as property for the Lords Groppe von Gudenberg and Wolff von Gudenberg and was a fief of the Archbishopric of Mainz. The castle met its end between 1269 and 1272, when it was destroyed by Landgrave Heinrich I of Hesse's troops during his conflicts with the Mainz Archbishop Werner von Eppstein.

Today, only remnants of ditches, walls, and ramparts remain of the former castle complex. The ruin is freely accessible, with the ascent involving some steep paths.
