Grüneck Castle (Ruin) (Ilanz)

The architectural style of Grüneck Castle suggests its erection around the turn of the 12th to the 13th century. A property in Ilanz Gryenegg was first mentioned in a rent book of the Dominican monastery of St. Nicolai in Chur in 1515. The Schmid von Grüneck family, who played a role in the administration of the Three Leagues state and provided high officials and military leaders, adopted their name only in the 16th century, long after the castle was presumably already abandoned. The Ilanz line of the Schmid von Grüneck died out in 1836 with the death of the last female descendant.
