Heuberg Castle (Ruin) (Kradolf-Schönenberg)

No written sources from the Middle Ages exist for Heuberg Castle. As no archaeological investigations have been carried out to date, its history can only be speculated upon. The complex was built on a hill about 100 meters long, which was protected at its southern end by a neck ditch. The core apparently consisted of a trapezoidal structure, internally divided, of which walls up to 3 meters high are still preserved today. It remains unclear whether the narrow northern part of the hilltop was also built upon.

The masonry, made of layered, roughly worked boulder stones, is very similar to that of the neighboring Schönenberg Castle. The medieval ownership structures also suggest that both castles belonged to the same lordship and perhaps were the seat of different family branches of the Lords of Schönenberg. These were first mentioned in documents in 1159. It is known that Friedrich von Schönenberg, who participated in the 4th Crusade in 1211, had five sons. Heuberg may have been built for one of them around that time.

The Schönenbergers were vassals of the Bishop of Constance. In 1352, Knight Johannes II ceded his ancestral castle with all its estates to the bishopric. At that time, a "guot uf Hoeberg" is also explicitly mentioned for the first time. However, the castle itself is not mentioned and may have already fallen into ruin by then. The name Heuberg referred to the entire ridge and still designates two farms immediately south of the ruin today. In popular parlance, the castle is also called "Alt-Weingarten". Since the 1970s, the "Cooperative for the Preservation of the Ruins Last and Heuberg" has been working to save the castle from final decay.
