The Hofberg Ruin, also known as Hofburg or Hofberg Castle, is a former hillside castle in the Middle Franconian district of Roth in Bavaria. It stands at approximately 500 meters above the Schwarzach Valley near Obermässing.

History+

In the early 13th century, the castle was built by the Lords of Mässingen, ministeriales of the Counts of Hirschberg. Its first documented mention occurred in 1281. The complex served as an administrative seat and protected the trade route in the Schwarzach Valley. In 1285, the childless Berthold von Mässingen bequeathed the castle and the village of Obermässing to the Teutonic Order, which established a commandry there. In 1465, Prince-Bishop Wilhelm von Reichenau acquired the castle for the Prince-Bishopric of Eichstätt, made it his summer residence, and established a bailiwick.
