Hohenberneck Castle (Ruin)

The history of Hohenberneck begins in 1478, when Veit von Wallenrode was enfeoffed with the castle site of the former Walpotenburg to build a new castle there. At that time, Veit was the bailiff of the Old Castle, which lay directly below. The financing of the new building, initially called Neuwallenrode, was secured by the repurchase of the Old Castle in 1477. Veit von Wallenrode died in 1499 before the castle was completed. His daughters sold the unfinished structure to Albrecht von Wirsberg, the bailiff of Stein, who completed it and sold it in 1501 to Margrave Friedrich II of Brandenburg-Kulmbach. As early as 1502, the first bailiff of the castle, now called Hohenberneck, is documented, marking the relocation of the administrative seat from the Old Castle to the new complex.
