Hohenegg Castle (Ruin)

The first mention of Hohenegg Castle dates back to 1171. Initially owned by the Lords of Rettenberg and later the Lords of Trauchburg, it became the ancestral seat of the Lords of Hohenegg around 1240, a collateral line of the Trauchburg family, who were considered noble already in the 12th and 13th centuries. Rudolf von Trauchberg first called himself “nobilis vir de Hohenegge” in 1244. In 1359, the Hohenegg family, who by then also used Vilsegg Castle as their new main residence, sold the complex to Count Wilhelm III of Montfort-Bregenz. In 1451, the castle was sold by Countess Elisabeth of Montfort-Bregenz to Duke Sigmund of Tyrol, who pledged it to Kaspar von Laubenberg in 1456. During the Peasants' War around 1525, the castle suffered damage.
