On an extended ridge in the village of Hohenfels in the Upper Palatinate stands the Hohenfels Ruin. This former hill castle, with its origins in the early 12th century, is now accessible.

History+

The construction of Hohenfels Castle is attributed to the Lords of Hohenfels, a ministerial family of the Bishops of Regensburg, who established their ancestral seat here in the early 12th century. In 1250, Konrad von Hohenfels attempted to assassinate King Konrad IV on behalf of the Bishop of Regensburg. After the failed attack, the castle was destroyed by order of the king but later rebuilt. In 1427, the complex was occupied by Palatinate Wittelsbachers and later fell victim to destruction by Bohemian Hussites.
