Hohenfels Castle (Ruin)
Hohenfels Castle is a castle ruin on an elongated ridge in the locality of Hohenfels in the Upper Palatinate district of Neumarkt in the Upper Palatinate in Bavaria.
The hilltop castle was probably built at the beginning of the 12th century by the Lords of Hohenfels († 1393), a branch of the Raitenbuchers († 1333), who were ministerials of the Bishop of Regensburg, as their allodial ancestral seat. On December 28, 1250, Konrad von Hohenfels, on behalf of the Bishop of Regensburg, attempted to assassinate King Konrad IV, but had to flee after the failed assassination attempt. Konrad IV had the castle destroyed, after which it was rebuilt. In 1427, the castle was occupied by Palatine Wittelsbach administrators and later destroyed by Bohemian Hussites. Although it was rebuilt, it lost its importance. In the 19th century, the castle was sold for demolition and used as a quarry.
Description+
The former, 100-meter-long Romanesque castle complex had two keeps. The round keep, built on the east side to protect the castle entrance on a rock spur, with an entrance made of rubble stone located at a height of over 10 meters, is still the only preserved castle building today.
The second square keep, with a side length of nine meters, of which only a stump remains, was faced with bossed ashlar and dates from the late 12th century. Which of the keeps was built first is uncertain.
Several angular castle buildings from the period between 1250 and 1427 were grouped around the angular keep, which protected the entrance to the core castle. A Gothic vault, found in the rubble, presumably comes from the castle chapel.
