In Allendorf, Hesse, the Hohenfels ruin is a former double castle on two peaks, which served the Lords of Hohenfels as their ancestral seat.

History+

The exact period of construction of the castle complex, which consists of a western and an eastern part, is not known. It is assumed that it was built in several construction phases, with the western part considered the older. The Hohenfels family first appeared in 1174, when a Ludwig von Hohenfels was named as a witness for Landgrave Heinrich Raspe. In 1244, Konrad, Gumpert, and Eckhard von Hohenfels, along with Volpert Hosekin and Siegfried Slimph, were documented as lords of the castle. Because the Lords of Hohenfels supported the Archbishopric of Mainz, Hohenfels Castle was razed in 1293 under Landgrave Heinrich.
