Hohenfreyberg Castle (Ruin)

Construction of Hohenfreyberg Castle began in 1418 under Friedrich von Freyberg zu Eisenberg, the eldest son of the lord of the nearby Eisenberg Castle. The building process lasted until 1432 and was financed by the revenues of the surrounding lordship. The original complex included the core castle with a main tower and large parts of the outer bailey. Around 1480, financial difficulties and the lack of a male heir forced the descendants to sell it to the Archduke of Austria. He then pledged Hohenfreyberg to the Augsburg merchant Georg Gossembrot, who modernized and militarily reinforced the castle. In 1513, the pledge reverted to Austria. During the Peasants' War in 1525, the castle was successfully defended thanks to its modernizations.
