Hohenmelchingen Castle (Ruin)

The construction of Hohenmelchingen Castle is presumed to have taken place in the 12th century. The complex was first documented in 1344, when Count Eberhard II and Ulrich von Württemberg, who were the owners at that time, granted parts of the castle and associated lands as a fief to Burkhard von Melchingen. In the 15th century, parts of the castle changed hands multiple times. From 1555, the castle was owned by Württemberg. Following presumed destruction, which led to its designation as a “Burgstall” (castle site) as early as 1580, the complex was definitively a ruin by around 1592. Between 1979 and 1984, restoration work was carried out by the city of Burladingen under the direction of architect Wilfried Pfefferkorn.
