Hohenringingen Castle (Ruin)

The origins of Hohenringingen Castle likely date back to the 11th century, when the keep was constructed. It was first documented in 1180, mentioning the knights Dietrich and Otte von Ringingen. In 1390, Heinrich, who had acquired the nickname Affenschmalz in Italy in 1373 while serving as a mercenary in the papal army, was 'seated here'. The castle fell into ruin after its destruction in the 15th century and was already referred to as a 'Burgstall' (castle site) in 1508. Restoration of the ruin began in 1972 as part of a local land consolidation project.
