Hohensax Castle (Ruin) (Sennwald)

Hohensax Castle, originally known as Sax Castle, was built around 1200 by the Barons of Sax and first documented around 1210. It gave its name to the surrounding villages of Sax, Salez, and Gams. Following a division of rule in 1248, the castle fell to Ulrich von Sax, who founded the Sax-Hohensax line. In 1393, the castle was plundered during a family feud and subsequently sold by Ulrich Eberhard III. von Sax-Hohensax, along with the villages of Sax and Gams, to the Dukes of Austria. Despite this transfer, the castle remained intact during the Appenzell Wars thanks to an alliance with the Appenzellers.
