The Hohenstein Ruin, the remains of a hilltop castle, is located on the Swabian Alb on a mountain near Oberstetten, a district of the municipality of Hohenstein, in the Reutlingen district of Baden-Württemberg.

History+

The construction of Hohenstein Castle took place towards the end of the 11th century by the Lords of Hohenstein. Its first documentary mention can be found around the year 1100 in the Zwiefalten Chronicle. The Hohensteins were a noble family in the High Middle Ages who controlled the administration, government, tax collection, and jurisdiction in the region from their castle. Their supra-regional importance was underscored by the presence of Margraves of Baden at court festivals held at the castle.
