Hohenstein Castle (Ruin)
Hohenstein Castle on the Swabian Jura is the ruin of a hilltop castle on a high mountain near Oberstetten, a district of the municipality of Hohenstein, in the Reutlingen district in Baden-Württemberg.
The castle was built at the end of the 11th century by the Lords of Hohenstein. The castle is first mentioned around 1100 in the Zwiefalten Chronicle. The Hohensteiners were wealthy nobles in the High Middle Ages who administered, governed, collected taxes, and dispensed justice from the castle. Its supra-regional importance was also evident at the court festivals, which were attended twice by Margraves of Baden.
The castle was expanded around 1300, fell into disrepair after its destruction in 1408, and was no longer inhabited by 1438. Later owners mentioned include the Counts of Zollern and Kaib von Hohens.
Extensive stabilization work was carried out from 1983 to 1985.

In the castle complex with its outer and inner bailey, the tower of the inner bailey, whose southeast corner is still preserved, was the dominant element. The keep (base area: 8.05 x 6.80 meters) had a height of about 13 meters with an entrance at 9 meters high and a wall thickness of 2.1 meters.
