Hohenwaldeck Castle (Ruin)

Hohenwaldeck Castle was built towards the end of the 13th century by the Lords of Waldeck, who were originally vassals of the Diocese of Freising. Through the construction of this spur castle, they managed to establish a largely independent dominion. In the 16th century, after the extinction of the Waldeck family, the possessions passed to the Lords of Maxlrain. However, by this time, the castle was already in an advanced state of decay, not least due to a rockfall in 1480 that destroyed the buildings. The complex was no longer permanently inhabited after the death of the last knightly resident, Georg von Waldeck (d. 1380), and the administrative seat moved to Schliersee.
