The Hohenwittlingen ruin, also known as Wittlingen, stands on a mountain spur above the Erms Valley near Bad Urach-Wittlingen.

History+

At the beginning of the 11th century, Knight Burkhard von Wittlingen had the castle built. A documented mention of a Burkhard de Witlingin appears in the years 1189/90. In 1548, the reformer Johannes Brenz sought refuge in the castle. During the Thirty Years' War, the complex was destroyed and fell into disrepair after 1648. Owners included the Counts of Achalm-Urach, Zwiefalten Monastery around 1100, and from 1251, the Counts of Württemberg.
