A former late medieval administrative castle, the Hollenberg Ruin sits atop a hill above the hamlet of Hollenberg in the municipality of Pegnitz. Located in the Upper Franconian district of Bayreuth, its upper castle offers expansive views over Franconian Switzerland.

History+

The construction of Hollenberg Castle is attributed to Emperor Charles IV, who acquired the town of Pegnitz and the surrounding area in 1357. The castle may have been built between 1357 and 1363, as a Bohemian administrator was mentioned there as early as 1363. The first written mention appeared in the Salbuch of 1366–68. The castle changed hands multiple times during the war between King Wenceslaus and King Rupert and was likely damaged in the process.
