Homburg Castle (Ruin)

The castle was built in 1240 by the Counts of Frohburg. In 1303, the Bishop of Basel acquired it, and from 1400 it was owned by the city of Basel. Due to border conflicts with the neighboring canton of Solothurn, the castle was kept in good condition and the entire complex was reinforced in 1540. Among other things, it served to station larger occupation troops. In the revolutionary year 1789, the castle was auctioned off and subsequently used as a quarry. It then deteriorated very rapidly.

The ruin, which is accessible at all times, consists of several parts; the most impressive is the mighty, three-story residential tower from 1240 with its 3-meter-thick walls. The tower built in 1540 and the various buildings, the curtain wall and the gate system give an idea of how imposing the complex once was.
