Hünenberg Castle (Ruin)

Early traces of settlement at the site of Hünenberg Castle date back to around 1100. At that time, an earth and timber structure, surrounded by a stone curtain wall, served as the ancestral seat of the Knights of Hünenberg. This family was first mentioned in writing in 1173, although it is unclear if this refers to the Zug lineage. A first representative of the Zug lineage appears in records in 1239 and 1240. Besides Hünenberg Castle, the family also owned St. Andreas, Wildenburg, and Zug castles. In the 12th century, the original complex was destroyed by fire. After another fire around 1200, the castle was rebuilt with a massive keep constructed using megalithic techniques and a representative palas. In 1386, the Hünenberg family fought on the side of Habsburg-Austria in the Battle of Sempach, after which the castle was destroyed following the defeat. With the collapse of Habsburg rule in the following decades, the Hünenberg family also lost influence. Rudolf von Hünenberg sold the dilapidated castle and its associated manorial rights in 1416 to the Bütler brothers from the village of Hünenberg. The keep remained standing until the 19th century. It was not until 1944 that the castle ruin was rediscovered through excavations, and in 1961, it was placed under federal protection. Extensive conservation measures and archaeological investigations were carried out between 2005 and 2009.

The Hünenberg Ruin is located in the municipality of Hünenberg in the canton of Zug, Switzerland, at an elevation of approximately 450 meters above sea level.
