Kalden Castle (Ruin)

The original Alt-Kalden castle, first mentioned in 1128, suffered from rockslides and was destroyed before 1500. This led to the construction of a new castle, today's Neu-Kalden ruin, about 300 meters south of the old site in 1515. However, this new complex was abandoned in 1692 and largely demolished by around 1840, so that today only a tower fragment remains. The Callindin family, who served the Kempten Abbey, was first mentioned in connection with the castle in 1128. After various changes of ownership, including to the Lords of Rothenstein and the Pappenheimers, the Princely Abbey of Kempten acquired the castle in 1692 but abandoned it due to impending landslides. In 1985, the ruin site became the property of the market town of Altusried.
