The Karlsfried ruin, a former hilltop castle, is located in the Zittau Mountains near Hartau. Its strategic position on a once important trade route made it a point for the movement of goods between Bohemia and Upper Lusatia.

Karlsfried Castle was erected in 1357 by order of Emperor Charles IV, under the direction of Burgrave Ulrich Tista von Liebstein. Its primary function was that of a fortified customs station on the Gabler Imperial Road, a crucial trade route. It also served as lodging and escort for traveling merchants. From 1364, the city of Zittau leased the complex. In 1412, it passed into the possession of Landvogt Hinko Berka von Dubá. During the Hussite Wars, the castle withstood a siege in 1421 but was burned down in a renewed attack in 1424. Under Emperor Sigismund, it was rebuilt.
