Kastelen Castle (Ruin) (Alberswil)

The remains of the Castle can be visited

The Ruine Kastelen, a former castle, is perched on a wooded hill in the Lucerne hinterland, near Alberswil in Switzerland. Its history is marked by powerful noble families and the turmoil of past conflicts, but today it offers visitors a fascinating glimpse into its remains and a wide view over the landscape.

History+

Kastelen Castle was built in the 13th century by the Counts of Kyburg, with the residential tower being constructed around 1252 under Hartmann V of Kyburg. After the extinction of the Kyburg family, the complex passed to the Habsburgs around 1264 and became the center of a Habsburg administrative district in 1273. It withstood the assault of the Gugler in 1375 and remained unharmed in the Sempach War of 1386. In 1482, the Lucerne mayor Hans Feer acquired the lordship, and his son Petermann Fehr had the residential tower lavishly furnished. The Peasant's War of 1653 led to the looting and decay of the castle. From 1996 onwards, the ruin was professionally restored and has been equipped with a publicly accessible observation tower since 2006.

Location+

The Ruine Kastelen is located on a wooded hill to the west of Alberswil, a municipality in the Willisau district, Canton Lucerne, Switzerland. It lies at an altitude of approximately 655 m above sea level.
