Kirneck Castle (Ruin)

The origins of the Kirneck Ruin date back to the late 12th century, when the Lords of Kirneck, who served as ministeriales of the Zähringer, built this dynastic castle. A Hugo von Kirneck is mentioned as early as 1185, while the castle itself first appears in written sources around 1280. Around the year 1400, the lineage of the Lords of Kirneck died out. In 1506, the complex became the property of the city of Villingen. The castle was demolished in 1810 and subsequently used as a quarry; at that time, a keep was reportedly still standing. A chapel, consecrated to Saint Wendelin in 1496, once stood at the foot of the castle rock.
