The remains of the Castle can be visited

West of Zierenberg in Northern Hesse, the ruins of Kleiner Gudenberg are on a forested basalt cone. Once a fief of the Lords of Gudenberg, it played a role in regional conflicts.

History+

The first documentary mention of Kleiner Gudenberg Castle dates back to 1175, though its construction likely occurred during the time of Gau Count Werner IV. It served as a Mainzian fief for the Lords of Gudenberg. The castle met its end in the conflicts between Mainz and Hesse in the years 1269 and 1272, when it was destroyed by Landgrave Heinrich I of Hesse.
