The Klettenberg Ruin, a hilltop castle, stands on a limestone rock in the Nordhausen district of Thuringia.
History+
Construction of Klettenberg Castle began in 1078 on a spur-like limestone rock. Its function was to monitor and protect the open terrain in the southern Harz region, as well as to secure Walkenried Monastery and a north-south road. This fortification led to the establishment of the County of Klettenberg, which was conquered in 1256 by the Counts of Hohnstein. Although the castle was later abandoned, it was refortified during the Thirty Years' War. After its destruction by Wallenstein's troops, it underwent several renovations and subsequently served residential purposes.
