Klettenberg Castle (Ruin)

In the year 1078, the construction of a castle began in Klettenberg. The castle of the same name was located to the east on a spur-like limestone rock. Its task was probably to control and protect the open terrain in the South Harz region. Furthermore, it probably also secured Walkenried Abbey and the north-south road. Thus, the County of Klettenberg was established, which was conquered in 1256 after constant feuds with the Count of Hohnstein. The castle was later abandoned, but re-fortified during the Thirty Years' War. Destroyed by Wallenstein's troops, it subsequently served residential purposes after several renovations.
