The ruin of St. Wolfgang Monastery, a remnant of a late medieval monastery, is situated in a forest area between Niederrodenbach and Hanau-Wolfgang in the Main-Kinzig district in Hesse. The complex gave its name to today's Hanau district of Wolfgang.

History+

The monastery's history began around 1468 with a chapel dedicated to Saint Wolfgang, built by Erasmus Hasefuß, a court quartermaster and trumpeter of Count Philipp I the Younger of Hanau. Between 1490 and 1494, Servite monks settled there, and a papal confirmation for the transfer of the monastery buildings followed. Count Philipp supported the monks in his will. In 1525, the monastery was plundered and partially destroyed by citizens of Hanau during the Peasants' War. A final destruction occurred in 1527, after which the monastery was abandoned.
