The Kocherburg ruin, also known as Kochenburg, is on a spur of the Härtsfeld near Aalen-Unterkochen in Baden-Württemberg. This former hilltop castle is an archaeological cultural monument.

History+

The origins of Kocherburg date back a long way, as it was integrated into a prehistoric fortification. In 1136, the Lords of Kochen, who presumably resided at the castle, were mentioned for the first time. Later, the castle passed to the Ahelfingen family, who ceded it to Ellwangen in 1317 in exchange for property in the village of Unterkochen. From then on, Kocherburg served as the seat of the chief bailiff of the Ellwangen district of Kochenburg.
