Königsberg Castle (Ruin)

The origins of the castle complex date back to the High Middle Ages, when it was erected after 1168 on the so-called “King's Vineyard.” Initially a fief of the Andechs-Meranians, the castle changed hands multiple times over the centuries. In 1192, a “Bertoldus de Kunigesberc” was first mentioned in documents. Later, it belonged to the Würzburg ministeriales, and from 1249, to the Counts of Henneberg. Through marriage, it passed to Burgrave Albrecht of Nuremberg in 1374 and later to Duke Swantibor of Pomerania, who sold it to the Bishop of Würzburg in 1394. In 1400, Balthasar of Thuringia acquired the complex.
