Kollnburg Castle (Ruin)

The Kollnburg castle ruin is a castle ruin located in the village at about 660 meters above sea level, west of the parish church of the municipality of Kollnburg in the district of Regen in Bavaria.

It is uncertain whether the hilltop castle was built by the Lords of Kalmberg as early as the 11th century. In 1153, the castle was first mentioned in a document as "Chalnberch" and was later, from 1363 to 1472, owned by the Lords of Nussberg ("de Nuzbach 1125"), who were ministeriales of the Counts of Bogen.

During the uprising of the Bavarian Forest knights against the policies of Duke Albrecht IV of Bavaria, known as the Böckler War, from 1468 to 1469, the castle was burned down and, after reconstruction, destroyed in the Thirty Years' War. In the 18th century, the castle, left to decay, was abandoned. Until 1816, the Kollnburg Hofmark was a sovereign knight's fief under changing owners.

In 1817, the entire property was auctioned off. In 1835, the brewer Josef Rockinger bought the castle. Remains of the lower part were demolished and used for the construction of a rectory.

On November 11, 1895, the Wald-Verein Viechtach acquired the castle tower, and in 1912, the first renovation took place. The tower was converted into an observation tower. The ruin is still owned by the Viechtach section of the Bavarian Forest Association.

Of the former small castle complex, only the round keep with a diameter of 8.2 meters and a wall thickness of two meters, the foundation walls of the palas, and the 17-meter-deep castle well remain. It is presumed that remnants of the castle walls are built into surrounding houses.
