Krebes Castle (Ruin)

Located in the west of the Vogtland, the towns were in the possession of the Vogtland noble family von Sack in the 14th century.

On the Burgstein, a noble seat is archivally documented for at least the 1420s ("... that [noble] people were seated at Burckstein[,] who were called the Pucher").

In 1474, following an apparition of Mary, a pilgrimage arose, connected with the erection of a pilgrimage chapel (today the western Burgstein ruin), which was subordinate to the parish of the neighboring town of Krebes and thus belonged to the Diocese of Bamberg. Not least the location directly on the border of the dioceses of Bamberg and Naumburg led to long-standing disputes between the two over the certainly not inconsiderable pilgrimage revenues, which were only settled by contract in 1487.

The construction of the second, eastern Burgstein church is to be seen in connection with its elevation to an independent parish in 1489 (it would therefore have been the parish church of the new church community). In the years 1512 and 1512, Elector Frederick the Wise (1463-1525), the responsible sovereign, donated textile furnishings to the Burgstein. With the implementation of the Reformation in the Vogtland and the associated rejection of Catholic pilgrimage practices, the decline of the double church complex began. Finally, in 1540, the Saxon Elector Johann Friedrich ordered the demolition of both Burgstein sacred buildings, which subsequently were not completely removed, but were left to decay. The members of the Burgstein parish were referred to the church of the neighboring town of Geilsdorf.
