The Kreidenstein ruin, remnant of a high medieval spur castle, stands on a rocky outcrop above the Bära Valley in the Sigmaringen region of Baden-Württemberg.

History+

Little is known about the early history and original owners of Kreidenstein Castle. The first confirmed information dates back to 1456, when Wilhelm von Kreidenstein, a member of the Rottweil patrician family Spretter, served as provost in Beuron Monastery. The Spretter family acquired the castle and subsequently called themselves Spretter von Kreidenstein. In 1470, Wilhelm von Kreidenstein bequeathed the castle, along with its accessories and fishing rights in the Bära, to Beuron Monastery.
