Kürnberg Castle (Ruin)
The castle ruin Kürnberg, also called Kürnburg or Kirnberg, is a castle ruin on the Haidberg approximately 1000 meters northeast of the municipality of Stamsried in the district of Cham in Bavaria. The castle ruin with a viewing platform is freely accessible.
After Dietrich der Kürner received Stamsried as a fief from Count Palatine Ruprecht II in 1346, he built the Kürnberg hilltop castle on the Haidberg with the permission of the Count Palatine and from then on called himself Kürner von Kürnberg. After the Kürnberg noble family died out in 1406, the castle passed to the Lords of Freundenberg in 1425 and subsequently changed owners frequently.
In 1634, the castle was destroyed during the Thirty Years' War after a siege by the Swedes and fell into disrepair. At the end of the 1970s, the castle ruin was extensively renovated.

The late Gothic castle ruin Kürnberg, one of the youngest castle foundations in the surrounding area, is an extensive castle complex with a wide, western moat, three courtyards, two gatehouses, and several partly semicircular towers (including a large battery tower). The tower-like, rectangular palas has a basement and projects approximately 25 cm on the upper floor over console-like stones. The castle did not have a keep. Extensive remains of the walls of the complex, including the main castle, outer bailey, and zwinger, are still preserved.
